FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Rolling right on a red light could soon be cheaper in California.
You’ve probably seen seen it, maybe even done it – failed to stop completely at a red light before making that right turn.
It’s a revenue generator with violators paying extra fees and surcharges, that $100 fine that can jump to $500 dollars.
Now, a second attempt by two Democratic state senators to lower the fines you pay when you’re caught.
Senator Jerry Hill from San Mateo, and Senator Ben Allen from Santa Monica (above), introduced Senate Bill 11-32 on Tuesday.
It would reduce the base fine from $100 dollars down to $35 bucks.
Hill told the Sacramento Bee that failing to fully stop at a red light is against the law, and the bill doesn’t change that – but it makes the penalty fit the violation.
If SB 1132 becomes law, then the lowered fine would take effect in July of 2019.
