Legislation Would Limit CA Opioid Prescriptions to 3 Days

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — New legislation calls for limiting opioid prescriptions to no more than 3 days.

The measure, introduced by Calif. Democratic Assemblyman Freddie Rodriguez, would also require a doctor to justify why a particular dosage is needed, if it hasn’t decreased after the third refill.

Opioids, designed only for temporary pain relief, led to nearly 2,000 overdose deaths in 2016, and nearly twice as many emergency room visits.

In addition, some California counties have more drug prescriptions than residents.
