FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The California High-Speed Rail Authority is now expecting the 119-mile stretch through the Central Valley to cost 27 percent more than anticipated.
The latest estimate for construction and planning is $8 billion, on a track originally scheduled to be completed this year, but is about 7 years behind schedule.
The higher figure was issued back in June, but has only now been made available, because of a Public Records Act request.
Critics fear the project, which has suffered numerous legal and financial setbacks, could see a price tag in excess of $100 billion.
The 2018 business plan is due out in February.
