FRESNO, CA (KMJ) -The Fresno Police Department is gearing up for a bike & pedestrian safety enforcement operations.
Numbers are on the rise in California, in just a two year span, the Fresno PD has investigated 741 injury collisions and 51 fatalities involving pedestrians and bicyclists.
Extra officers will be on the streets patrolling high crash areas in an effort to save life and limb.
Fresno Officer John Belli says technology is helping them.
“We have basically a data software program here where we can run collisions involving pedestrians, bicyclists involved with vehicles also, and map out locations where we see the highest amount of collisions involving the connection between the pedestrians, bikes and vehicles.” Fresno Policea Officer John Belli.
All riders are reminded to wear a helmet.
Officers will also be on the lookout for pedestrians jaywalking or failing to yield to drivers with the right of way, and those drivers caught speeding, making illegal turns or failing to yield to pedestrians will be ticketed.
