Fresno Chaffee Zoo Moves Its Last Asian Elephant

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The last Asian elephant at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Shaunzi, has been moved to her new home – at the Los Angeles Zoo.

Shaunzi lost her longtime companion, Kara, who had to be put down recently after chronic osteo-arthritis issues.  Chaffee Zoo CEO Scott Barton says it had always been the plan to move both elephants, before Kara’s condition progressed.  After she was put down, the Zoo kept moving forward with its plan to find Shaunzi a new home.  At the LA Zoo, Shaunzi will get to socialize with three other Asian elephants.

As for the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Kara and Shaunzi’s exhibit will be modified to be able to house rhinos.  Shaunzi’s move means an end for Asian elephants at the zoo, but there’s three other elephants in the African Adventure exhibit.
