Survey Reveals Many Americans Remain in the Dark on Cyber Matters

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Even with major cyber attacks affecting prime institutions, many Americans lack clarity on cyber matters, especially on the technical side.

According to the Pew Research Center, most internet users understand the importance of using a adequate passwords.

However, when it comes to identifying potentially malicious websites, literacy continues to be low.

Only one-third of those surveyed knew that a URL beginning with “https,” is indicative of a site with encrypted traffic.

A mere 13 percent understand that the dangers of using an unsecured WiFi network can be partially combated, by using a virtual private network (VPN).

Although, Pew researchers say younger and more educated online users, tend have a greater understanding of cyber subjects.
