Cost of Providing Health, Dental Benefits to Retired State Employees Nearly $77B

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The cost of providing health and dental benefits to retired California state government employees is nearly $77 billion.

According to a new report from the State Controller’s office, every Californian, regardless of immigration status, would have to pay nearly $2,000 to cover that sum.

Costs have grown substantially over the past 15 years, and total health and dental liabilities rose by nearly $2.5 billion last year alone.

However, Controller Betty Yee expects to see them level out within several years, due to changes in the way the state will fund retiree benefits for new hires.
