FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Fresno Teacher’s Association responds to Superintendent Michael Hanson’s decision to leave the Fresno School District.
On Monday, the leader of Fresno Unified announced he will be leaving his position as of August 2017.
Louis Jamerson, (seen above) the Executive Director of the Fresno Teachers Association, says even with Hanson’s announcement of his impending departure – nothing changes.
“We still have 2000 kids who went to school who were homeless today, we still had almost 90% of our African American and Latino students failing math, today, we still had almost 80% of that same student population failing English, so the work doesn’t change, we still gotta stay the course.” – Louis Jamerson, FTA Executive Director.
Jamerson says they are fine with Hanson leaving, they are looking forward to change and they hope Hanson leaving leads to significant improvement in school in the future.
The FTA is still bargaining their contract with Hanson in good faith.
“We’re also going to prepare for a strike. We don’t believe that because he has made an announcement that he’s leaving the district in almost a year that’s going to change things for our professionals and our students, so we must stay vigilant and stay the course.” – Louis Jamerson, FTA Executive Director.
