FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Fresno County Sheriff joined religious leaders on Tuesday to say “no” to Proposition 64.
The measure would legalize regulated use of marijuana – for people over 21 years of age – in the Golden state. The state would impose taxes on sales and cultivation. Those against the measure say even though there would be regulations, enforcement of the regulations will be difficult.
“What’s happened in Colorado (where marijuana use is legal) is now there’s more enforcement than ever trying to keep the legalization rules in line with those using marijuana,” said Sheriff Margaret Mims. “What they’re finding is there’s more people out in public using marijuana, which is not legal in Colorado and it won’t be legal in California. So that’s going to increase our workload with those kinds of complaints.”
Yes on Proposition 64 spokesman Jason Kinney says passing the measure would make it more difficult for the youth to use it.
“Poll after poll shows that it’s easier for youth and teenagers to access marijuana than it is alcohol,” said Kinney. “We have the lowest rates of teen smoking and teen alcohol usage in our state’s history – or at least in 30 years – and it’s not because we’ve criminalized alcohol and tobacco. It’s because we’ve controlled it. We’ve regulated it.”
