FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – After Fresno State had a 31-0 lead over Tulsa on Saturday, the Golden Hurricane rocked the ‘Dogs by coming back to win in double overtime, 48-41. The loss, which drops Fresno State to 1-3 heading into Mountain West Conference play is not sitting well with fans – especially since the ‘Dogs went 3-9 last year.
The Fresno State Athletics Facebook page was slammed with negative comments about the football program over the weekend, with some people calling for coach Tim DeRuyter to be fired. DeRuyter responded to the criticism at his weekly press conference on Monday.
“(The negative comments are) part of the business and I get it,” said DeRuyter. “One of the things I love about being here is that people care. People want to win. I don’t want to be at a place where people don’t care. And so when you don’t have success, you’re going to hear about it. And I expect that, but I want people to know this team’s got a chance. This team’s got resolve. Just hang out – you’ll see a team that’s this close to being able to explode.”
DeRuyter said he doesn’t look at the negative comments or stories about the team. He says he has faith in himself, his coaching staff and team.
The ‘Dogs travel to face another 1-3 team in UNLV this weekend.
