FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — In a study involving more than 1.7 million patients, women had significantly more allergic reactions to common medications than men.
According to the journal Allergy, the more than 2 decades of research also found white patients, tend to suffer more than other ethnic groups.
The most common allergies are to penicillin, sulfonamide antibiotics, as well as opiates.
Symptoms typically include rash, hives, or fever.
Experts say women also tend to react more negatively to drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen.
They’re not sure why that’s the case, adding that following-up studies are needed.
