FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — $53.6 billion. According to The Road Improvement Program, that’s how much drivers in the Golden State pay each year, for congested roads and deteriorating conditions.
The latest data shows that rough roads are to blame for more than $18 billion in repair costs, wasted fuel, and premature tire wear.
Congestion-related delays are responsible for $28 billion, while traffic accidents account for more than $7 billion.
Experts say the report confirms what most of us already know: California’s transportation system is in bad shape.
State lawmakers are proposing various means of funding road repairs, most of which contain higher taxes and fees.
