Governor Brown Signs Lane-Splitting Bill Into Law

KMJ ROADS

FRESNO (KMJ) – Governor Jerry Brown signed AB-51 into law Friday, making California the first state to make lane-splitting by motorcyclists legal.

Lane-splitting is the practice of passing other vehicles on a motorcycle by riding between them along the painted line.

Brown’s signature authorizes the CHP to develop guidelines for the motorcyclists who weave in and out of traffic.

The new guidelines would take away some of the subjectivity for the California Highway Patrol when deciding when lane-splitting becomes reckless driving and subsequently a misdemeanor.
