Calif. to Draft Guidelines for Lane-Splitting

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Lane-splitting, the practice of passing other vehicles on a motorcycle by riding between them along the painted line, has been a gray area in the Golden State.

It’s not been deemed legal or illegal. However, last year when the CHP published safe strategies on lane-splitting, there were complaints that the agency should not be permitted to draft public policy.

Now, under legislation unanimously approved by the California Assembly, the CHP would be able to establish guidelines.

The move is being applauded by the American Motorcyclist Association, who believes it will give them the authority they need to educate riders and drivers.
