FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Newly-filed campaign fiance reports show California Treasurer John Chiang raked in $2.3 million during the first 45 days of his campaign.
Chiang raised more than double what his rival Democrat and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, raised during the same timeframe, after declaring his candidacy last year.
Records show Newsom has more than $8.6 million in two accounts, and Chiang still has more than $3 million from his last campaign, which he could use in the 2018 race.
The two are the first candidates to enter the race to succeed Governor Jerry Brown, although former Los Angeles mayors Antonio Villaraigosa and Eric Garcetti, former California Controller Steve Westly, and environmentalist Tom Styer, are also expected to run.
