FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Golden State is among 11 others and the District of Columbia joining the U.S. Justice Department, in trying to block the proposed $48.3 billion merger of health insurance giants Anthem and Cigna.
Consolidating two of the five largest insurers, according to a lawsuit filed, would substantially reduce competition and drive up costs.
Here in California, Anthem and Cigna presently go head-to-head.
Cigna says it’s evaluating its options, and believes the earliest the merger could occur is next year, if at all.
