FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — If you’ve signed up for an account online, you’ve probably agreed to paragraphs of legal jargon at some point, without actually reading them.
However, you might think twice, after hearing about a new Michigan State University study.
Researchers launched a test social networking site, which they called “Namedrop.”
Users were presented with an 8,000-word privacy policy, to which 75 percent agreed, without paying any attention.
Among the clauses: allowing their data to be sold to outside companies who could determine their eligibility for a loan, as well as prospective employers.
It didn’t end there; the users who failed to the terms of service agreed to give up their first born child.
While this was obviously an extreme experiment, experts say it serves as a reminder to pay more attention to terms to which you agree.
