FRESNO, Calif.( KMJ) — Caltrans has officially launched the pay-by-mile Road Charge Pilot Program.
The goal is to determine whether the State of California can generate more revenue, which it says will be used to fund infrastructure repairs.
Thousands of volunteers have signed up for the pilot program, in which no money will actually be exchanged.
California is not the only state studying alternative funding for road repairs; Washington, Utah, and Colorado are exploring similar programs.
Last July, Oregon launched the first phase of its road charge program, in which volunteers pay 1.5 cents per mile driven, as opposed to a fuel tax.
