Chief Dyer Helps Nab Courthouse Park Gunman

SHOOTINGFRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A shooting in Courthouse Park in Downtown Fresno Friday morning led to panic in the area and lockdowns.

A 57-year-old man was shot in the lower body around 10:30, and has been taken to the hospital.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims says the shooter, 53 year-old Anthony Simpson, knew the two victims, a man and a woman – who was his target.

The woman had filed a restraining order at the Fisk Courthouse and was walking to the Sheriff’s Office when the crime occurred.

Sheriff Mims says Simpson showed up in the Park with a gun and was rushing the woman, who fell – but got away.

Sheriff Mims says Simpson then turned the gun on the man… and shot him once in the leg.

He was sent to CRMC with non-life threatening injuries.

The gunman was caught a short time later by Fresno Police, who were first on scene in the park.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer helped apprehend Simpson, who they found about three blocks away near Chukchansi Park.

Sheriff Mims is now asking any other victims of the attack to come forward and call the Sheriff’s Office at 600-3111.
