FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Following a ruling by the U.S. 9th Circuit Courts of Appeals that Californians do not have a constitutional right to carry concealed weapons in public, a bill has been introduced to impose stricter standards for permits.
Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty’s proposal calls for imposing a “good cause” standard statewide and increasing permit fees, so that they cover the cost of following up — and potentially revoking — permits from those who are deemed dangerous.
McCarty says he wants to prevent concealed-carry permits from being handed out like “candy on Halloween” and stricter standards, plus higher fees, would result in fewer permits being issued.
The proposal is already drawing criticism from some in law enforcement and gun rights activists.
