FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — When it comes to the question of whether drinking alcohol is good or bad for heart, there’s really no simple answer.

That’s according to the latest research published in British Medical Journal.

Experts, comparing data from “wet” and “dry” counties in Texas, say those living in “dry” counties, where alcohol sales are prohibited, have a higher risk of being hospitalized for heart issues.

However, residents of “wet” counties are at an elevated risk for a heart rhythm disorder, which can increase the risk of a stroke.

When it comes to heart attacks, the study’s authors say people who drink moderately — one drink a day for women, and up to two drinks for men — are at a lower risk, than who don’t drink at all.
