FRESNO (KMJ) – Extreme heat – dangerous… for pets…
“It’s something that I never thought about until I was in this field. I’ve seen some of the injuries that come in – it’s not that you even think of… ‘Oh, fluffy wants to go for a walk – lets go for a walk.’” – Dr. K.C. Schreiber, DVM, Veterinary Emergency Services.
A walk on a hot day can cause third degree burns on your dogs paws.
Some dogs are affected just by breathing hot air.
“One big thing to worry about are the dogs that are short or stubbed nosed, your English Bulldogs, your American Bulldogs, Pug dogs, Boxers, they are not equip to handle the heat.” -Dr. K.C. Schreiber, DVM.
And they could die of heat stroke – Dr. Schreiber says keep them inside – for outdoor dogs check their water to make sure it’s fresh.
“Making sure that your fences are secure so that your best friends can’t get out of your yard, always make sure they have some shade if they are going to be outdoor dogs.” – Dr. K.C. Schreiber, DVM.
Leave pets at home not in your car.
Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, and excessive thirst.
If you see any those symptoms in your pet – cool them down immediately and get in contact with the vet.
