Council Approves Changes To Fresno Blight Rules

Blight

FRESNO (KMJ) – By a 6-0 vote, Fresno City Council approved ordinance changes to target blighted properties.

Under the City’s current ordinance property owners are accountable for their property…but now the City of Fresno can go after whoever is responsible for chronic problems — making property managers and even tenants responsible for nuisance issues.

“It will give us another tool, give us some teeth to the existing rule so we can go after the HOA, the managers and the occupants.” – Esmeralda Soria, Fresno City Council Member.

Fresno City Council Member Esmeralda Soria says the tougher rules approved Thursday will combat chronic problems.

The changes also address the dangerous situations that arise out of illegal subletting and division of houses or apartments.

In six months, City Council will revisit the issue to examine how the new rules are working.
