(KMJ) – Fresno Police are lead on a chase Thursday afternoon that ends in a fiery crash near Fresno City College.
A motorcycle officer on Blackstone near Princeton saw a pickup driving erratically and began to give chase. The driver of the truck, 37-year old Donald Whitley eventually came to a stop after taking out a utility pole near Fresno City College’s Euless Baseball park.
Immediately after the collision, Whitley got out of his truck and ran. But he was captured a short time later. But, his truck, which was carrying pool cleaning chemicals caught fire. That brought in the Fresno Fire Department’s Haz-Mat team and forced the evacuation of the ballpark and near-by parts of campus. The blaze was extinguished but re-ignited several times before it was finally doused for good.
Whitley was arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol beverages (his blood alcohol content was .21), misdemeanor hit and run, and was charged with felony evading a police officer.
