FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Dementia and brain shrinkage can be caused by more than 100 over-the-counter cold and allergy medications.

That’s according to a new study published in the journal of the American Medical Association Neurology.

60 percent of elderly participants who were taking medications such as Dimetapp, Demerol, and Benadryl, showed smaller brain sizes and decreased brain function.

A separate study found that taking such cold/allergy medications for as few as 60 days in a row, may be enough to negatively affect the brain.
