CLOVIS (KMJ) — The much fought over dress code at Clovis Unified School district – has been changed. Among a raft of adjustments, the biggest differences include striking out gender specific rules for things such as hair length, whether male students can wear dresses or skirts, and on tank tops and athletic wear.
At a board meeting Wednesday night, it was decided that they should be changed for what’s now the 25th time since they were adopted in 1975.
“The dress code was being looked at in terms of the neutrality of the policy, in setting expectations that were the same for all students”, says Clovis Unified’s Kelly Avants.
She adds that the regulations were put in place as an important safety tool, and the alterations maintain what was originally intended.
“[It establishes] the students who should and should not be on campus, a mutually respectful environment when you talk about attire that’s maybe specific to gang representation that is kept far off of our campuses through our dress code.
“We’re also always conscious of the fact that our students when they graduate from High School are going to go on to the world of work”.
The new dress code is now in force, and it’s been described as one of the most comprehensive dress codes in California.
“We believe in the district, and we have seen through decades of examples, that it really does make a positive difference on our campuses and we feel will continue to make a positive difference”.
