(KMJ) Fresno State was scrappy. But scrappy doesn’t always win games in the Big Dance.
3 seed Utah was just too big for the 14th seeded Bulldogs to pull off the upset. The Utes, led by center Jakob Poeltl, dashed the Dogs hopes 80-69 in Denver’s Pepsi Center Thursday.
Poeltl, who could be an NBA lottery pick should he choose to declare, finished with 16 points.
His most impressive feat — outrebounding the entire Fresno State team 18 to 15.
After trailing by as much as 15 points, the Bulldogs clawed their way back to briefly take the lead 48-47 with a little over 10 minutes remaining.
But the Utes proved too tough and went on a dominant second half run to end the Bulldogs season.
Bulldogs star guard and Fresno State’s all time leading scorer, Marvelle Harris, led all scorers with 24 points.
