FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Organized labor has declined to less than 16 percent of the California workforce, with fewer than 2.5 million union members in 2015.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, union membership peaked at almost 19 percent in the Golden State, back in 1989; it reached a low of 15.5 percent, in 2000.
Nationwide, almost half of all union members live in only a handful of states, including California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
