FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Given the severe shortage in the Golden State, policymakers have been focused on finding new water supplies.

One of the more controversial ideas is offering “potable reused water,” which is essentially treated wastewater.

California regulations currently prohibit public systems from selling such water to their customers; but, Assemblyman Richard Gordon wants to change that.

While the concept of bottling and drinking treated wastewater may make you uncomfortable, astronauts have been drinking it for decades.

Gordon says if it’s good enough to keep astronauts alive, it should be good enough for us.
