PORTER RANCH (KMJ) — A gas leak in Southern California, which has been spewing noxious fumes for months, has been stopped.

The Aliso Canyon leak in Porter Ranch has been active since October 2015, and the effects of the gas on local residents forced thousands out of their homes.

“We have good news”, announced the California Department of Conservation’s Jason Marshall Thursday morning. “The Division of Oil and Gas has confirmed that the leak in Aliso Canyon storage field is permanently sealed”.

But plugging the leak is only one part of solving the situation.

“We will investigate what happens”, continues Marshall. “The Division, and the California Public Utilities Commission have already started to investigate the cause of the leak.

“What we learn from the findings of those investigations is going to guide us in the development and refinement of the emergency regulations into permanent regulations, with the goal of protecting public health and safety at all gas storage facilities in California”.

The results from the tests are available, and links to them can be found clicking here.
