Weekend Storm Brings Rainfall Records

RAINFALL

(KMJ) – Anyone who doubted the potential impact of El Nino on the Central Valley should have had any question washed away this weekend.

Sunday’s storm brought plenty of rain and numerous precipitation records across the San Joaquin Valley. The drenching storm set records for the date in Fresno, Madera, Hanford and Merced. In Fresno, 0.98 inches of rain fell Sunday, beating the record for the date of 0.96 inches set in 1963.

The additional precipitation made January’s rain total of 4.24 inches.  That is the most Fresno has seen for the month since 1995. It was also enough to make this the eighth-wettest January ever.

Meantim, the snow line fell to as low as 2,500 feet Sunday night. And the National Weather Service in Hanford said up to five feet of fresh snow was reported in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. And chain controls were in place on Highways 180, 168 and 41.
