(KMJ) – The reward is increased as Fresno County homicide detectives work to find the person who murdered an elderly Calwa woman and her son, back on January 11th of this year.
77 year-old Maria Socorro Lopez and her son, 55 year-old Jesus Castor were walking along the 2400 block of South Tenth Street, with another family member.
It was around about 2 a.m. when they came across a group of 4 or 5 men – one of the men pulled out a gun and started firing.
Both Lopez and his mother were hit.
He died at the scene – his mother (seen above) died January 25th at Community Regional Medical Center.
No arrests have been made, but detectives believe someone in Calwa has information, and they’re asking the public for help.
Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims spoke to media on Thursday, announcing that the reward had been increased to $5,000.
Crimestoppers President Dale Menzoza said donations came in to bring it up to that amount to “get the killers off the streets.”
Mendoza said he was initially going to bring the reward up to $2,500 but received even more money after Dustin Pest Control, which had employed a member of the Castor family, donated $2,500 to make the total reward an even $5000 dollars.
Family members stood crying behind Sheriff Mims as she spoke at the press conference.
“The family is devastated, they are hard-working people not involved in any kind of criminal activity.” – Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims.
She said the family had recently moved to Calwa and didn’t know anyone, the shooting seeming random.
The Sheriff said deputies are working non-stop to find whoever is responsible for the murders.
