FRESNO (KMJ) — Members of the Fresno Teachers Association say they want to “take back their school district”.
They held a community meeting Wednesday night in an effort to achieve just that, with the focus on how to improve education within Fresno Unified School District.
“The top three priorities that the community came up with was more social and emotional support for students, smaller class size, and safer campuses”, says teacher and member of the FTA executive board Chris Finley.
“We’ve presented that to the district but there hasn’t been much movement in those areas so a lot of schools to this day don’t have full time nurses, some campuses don’t have security assistants [in] a lot of the elementary schools, the class sizes in some areas are above 40”.
The FTA wants those matters addressed, as they say the students deserve better. Wednesday night’s meeting in Central Fresno was attended by member of the school district’s board Carol Mills, who answered questions before the body. Fresno Unified School District as a whole say they appreciate that the Fresno Teachers Association is hosting these sessions, and that they’re holding similar gatherings themselves.
“We invite the community to attend upcoming district meetings next week”, said the districts’ Jedidiah Chernabaeff, “or go online to www.fresnounified.org to provide us their ideas their ideas for supporting our students”.
