FRESNO (KMJ) — A car chase and an exchange of gunfire between police and two suspects in Southeast Fresno has ended with one in custody – and another on the run.
Chief Jerry Dyer says the chain of events began Tuesday evening, when a call about two suspects firing rounds into an apartment complex, near the intersection of Chestnut and McKinley, was received.
“Based on that information, members of our street violence section were able to identify who the suspect was. It was an 18 year old named Miles Banks”.
After it was determined where Banks lived, undercover officers were there waiting for him to show up before they called in SWAT. But when he pulled out of his garage, the undercover officers followed him as he went to pick up someone else. Chief Dyer says the passenger was then seen firing into the air, and then the car started driving erratically.
“It was at that time the passenger in that vehicle turned and began to fire back at the officers. Fortunately neither one of our officers were struck by the gunfire.
“Our undercover officers began to return fire at the suspect”.
That exchange of gunfire then continued until the group reached the intersection of Peach and Olive, where the undercover officers attempted to forcibly stop the suspect’s vehicle.
“The officer that ended up ramming the suspect said he did what he had to do”, continued Chief Dyer. “He knew he could not allow this thing to continue – a running gun battle through the streets of Fresno.
“It was at that time that he struck the vehicle, knocked it up on the curb, which caused the passenger to run from the vehicle. Ultimately allowed them to take the driver into custody”.
The other suspect has been identified as Adell Vaughn, and Fresno Police advise anyone who sees him not to approach him to call 911 immediately. An image of Vaughn is below.
