CSU System Considering Banning Hoverboards On All Campuses

FRESNO (KMJ) — Decision makers within the California State University system are discussing whether or not to ban hover-boards on all CSU campuses.

Fears over the two wheeled transportation device suddenly bursting into flames are what’s sparked off the discussion.

Hoverboards have become incredibly popular over the past few months, becoming one of the must-have Christmas gifts last year and being the subject of many a viral video.

But that popularity has come at a price.

“Spontaneous combustion and some of those types of issues that are occurring, primarily when they’re being recharged”, says Robert Boyd with Fresno State’s Facilities Management.

He says the office which monitors the 23 CSU campuses are in discussion about an outright ban, but no decision has been made at this point.

“We look to our system office down in Long Beach, who has risk management as well as the safety all those types of concerns. So I think they’re going to do some investigation, they’ll probably form a panel or committee to look into those discussions to make sure that the appropriate action is taken”.

“We are a very pedestrian friendly campus. As a result the boards, the scooters, the hoverboards, the skateboards, those things. We do have on occasion some conflict between people and students moving about”.

However, there is no timetable as to when that’s going to take place.

“There are some questions and concerns. At the same time I really feel we need to vet out all the potential possibilities so that when the answers are given that they’re well thought through and that there’s appropriate action taken if needed”.
