FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Table sugar may increase the risk of developing breast cancer, according to a new study from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Researchers say mice with sucrose intake comparable to levels of western diets had a greater chance of experiencing tumor growth and metastasis, compared to mice that were fed a non-starch sugar diet.

Previous studies linking high sugar intake and breast cancer development suggested inflammation was the source.

The study’s authors say moderate sugar consumption is critical, as increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is believed to be a major contributor, to global epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and cancer.
