If you — or someone in your family got a hoverboard for christmas get ready for new restrictions on how and where you can ride it.
New regulations for “hoverboards” go into effect Friday, January 1, 2016.
The California Highway Patrol says the new rules were passed earlier this year with an eye on increasing safety on the wheeled devices.
Now, the law will only allow boards to be ridden on streets with a speed limit of 35 mph or less, unless they’re in a designated bikeways and at speeds of no greater than 15mph.
Riders will need to be at least 16 years old and must wear bicycle helmets.
The law also requires the boards be equipped with reflectors and lights for nighttime use.
The CHP also says cities and counties will be authorized to restrict the use of the boards.
Lastly, riders will not be permitted to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while on the devices
Violators could be fined $250.
