Californians are expected to travel in droves as more than 12.2 million California residents plan to travel for this Christmas and New Year’s holiday season combined.
10.9 million Californians traveling during Christmas and New Year’s will choose to drive to their holiday destinations.
AAA estimates more than 424,000 are expected to travel by boats or trains, while more than 965,000 Californians are expected to fly – with airfares for the top 40 domestic flight routes 6% lower this year.
AAA Spokesperson Cynthia Harris says watch out for distracted drivers: “It is a hazard, and it’s an extremely dangerous situation to be distracted when you’re driving. and you really have to look out for the other drivers, it’s not just about you, it’s about looking around you and you have to being very defensive when you drive, and it’s absolutely of the utmost importance because we know that the weather changes when you drive. you need to protect your family, yourself and your vehicle.”
The holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, December 23rd, 2015 through Sunday, January 3rd, 2016.
Harris says to check your car to make sure it’s ready, and your tires are good.
Also, drivers should pack an emergency kit, with food, water and blankets if you are traveling in the mountains, leave early, and check ahead to where you are going to see what you might encounter, such as rain and fog.
