FRESNO (KMJ) — A very famous beagle will soon be helping our state’s museums.
Snoopy is set to appear on special California license plates, with the money raised from the plate’s sale going towards a grant scheme for our museums. The state has received the necessary 7,500 pre-orders to begin production.
“Our museums are such an important part of our history and culture”, says State Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins. “We have to keep them strong for our future generations.”
“Once the plates are in production and people begin to see them on the roadways, we expect orders to increase exponentially.”
She says the state government has to do a lot of hard things as part of its usual duties, and it’s not often they can match a critical need for museums with something fun.
“To help our museums fulfill their educational missions and serve Californians. The Snoopy plate is an entrepreneurial way to provide a new and sustainable ongoing source of funding for museums without having to rely heavily and solely on our state’s general fund”.
The regular plate will cost $50 initially and then $40 per year to renew. A personalized plate will be $98 for the first year, and then $78 to renew. Those who purchase the plate before December 18th, what’s called a ‘Beagle Backer’, will receive one time free or discounted admission to over 85 museums.
And why Snoopy? Jean Schulz, the widow of peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, says she recognized the need for grants like this after her experience founding a museum in Santa Rosa back in 2002.
