(KMJ) – The state law banning the use of “Redskins” as mascot for public-funded schools may face a challenge on the November ballot.

Gustine Mayor Dennis Brazil said it would take 365,000 signatures from registered voters to put the issue as a referendum in the upcoming election.

A committee that will seek to secure the signatures is forming and will include representatives from the Tulare, Chowchilla, Gustine and Calaveras.  Those are the four California cities with a high school using “Redskin” as mascot.

If the required signatures are collected, the issue will automatically make it to the ballot, Brazil said.

Signed earlier this year, the law stems from California Assembly Bill 30 and calls for banning the word “Redskin” and the use of it as a mascot nickname.  It becomes effective on Jan. 1, 2017.
