FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Putting a period at the end of your text is unfriendly, according to a new study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior.

Researchers say text messages ending with a period are often perceived as being less sincere.

Critical, non-verbal aspects of conversation, such as tone, tend to be lost.

They say it comes as no surprise that texters exploit what’s available to them: emoticons, deliberate misspellings that mimic speech sounds, and improper or no punctuation.

Interestingly, the study found that handwritten notes, are rarely perceived as being less sincere.
