FRESNO (KMJ) — Charities right across the valley are taking part in a national day of giving. The ‘#GivingTuesday’ campaign follows on from other day-related events we’ve had over the past week.

We started with Black Friday, then onto Small Business Saturday, Sunday was just a regular Sunday, and then Cyber Monday.

‘#GivingTuesday’ is all about giving back to charities, volunteering, and philanthropic efforts after days of shopping. The hashtag is what groups across the country are using to link up their individual efforts into one national campaign.

Here in the valley, United Way of Fresno and Madera Counties are taking part in the drive to raise much needed funds.

“It’s going to be used for our ‘Adopt A Family’ program”, says the non-profit’s Robert DeLaRosa.

“We find families in the valley that just need a little assistance over the holiday season with basic necessities like blankets, food, warm clothes, bedding, stuff like that”.

Last year was the first year United Way of Fresno and Madera Counties took part in the national effort, and this year they’re hoping to raise at least $1000.

“Some of them are having a really really hard time”.

“The kids are sleeping on box springs with no mattress, some of the kids have zero jackets and it’s freezing outside right now. They just need some people that have a little extra step up and help them out”.

Other local groups such as Fresno’s Community Food Bank and the Central California SPCA are also included.
