FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The State Treasurer’s Office has launched an open data website, which it believes will make it easier to analyze $1.5 trillion in debt issued to the state and local governments, since 1984.

John Chiang says his goal is to empower Californians to hold the government accountable for its borrowing decisions.

He adds that he never wants quote “another Bell to happen.” Chiang was referring to the Southern California city, which saw 8 leaders prosecuted last year for stealing several million dollars from city coffers.
