FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The California Energy Commission is considering new standards, which would establish LED bulbs as the statewide standard.

The commission believes it would save more than $4 billion over about 13 years, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Previously approved legislation requires a 50% reduction in residential energy usage by 2018, compared to 2007 levels.

It’s thought that light-emitting diodes, which tend to cost significantly more than their traditional counterparts, will play a vital role.

Proponents say the higher cost of the bulbs is more than offset by the energy savings.
