FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The University of California was blasted by lawmakers for admitting more high-paying, out-of-state students, at the expense of California high school students.

However, under a proposal set to be considered by the UC Board of Regents next week, the university would expand resident enrollment by 10,000 undergraduates, with a 5,000-slot increase next fall.

If approved, it would allow the system to receive $25 million set aside in California’s budget.

The university was involved in a bitter fight with the governor and lawmakers earlier this year over tuition increases. A deal was reached that will increase its funding, in exchange for tuition freezes.
