FRESNO (KMJ) — A K9 officer with Fresno County Sheriff’s Department has died after a long and decorated career.
Reno was best known for being wounded in the line of duty during a shootout in July 2009, when he lost his left eye.
His recovery time was short, returning to duty just six weeks after his injury.
In his time with the department Reno received several awards including the Community Champions Award in 2009, the Animal Rescue Hero Award in 2010, and a Purple Heart from the Sheriff’s Office.
“This boy battled some illness recently and was a true warrior. He was full of energy”, said Lt. John Reynolds. “He fought until his very last breath”.
He had retired five years ago, and was 12 years old when he passed away on Saturday.
Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is currently staffed with nine K9 teams.
