Petition Wants To Bring Haggis Back To The United States

HAGGIS

FRESNO (KMJ) — After being banned almost 45 years ago, a Scottish News agency is trying to bring haggis real back to the United States.

The USDA rejected imports of the delicacy due to sheep’s lung being one of the key ingredients, and that was all the way back in 1971.

Los Angeles based British man Richard Jeffries has joined forces with news site ‘Scotland Now’ to encourage haggis lovers to sign a petition to bring it back again.

For those who don’t know what haggis is, the Scots based food is a savory dish that uses a sheep’s heart, liver, and lungs – mixed with onion, oatmeal, and various spices, and encased in the animal’s stomach. Those who try it say it’s a lot more delicious than it sounds.

On the Change.org petition page, Jeffries says “it tears me up that I have to serve my friends a weak imitation of the real thing on St Andrew’s Day on 30 November and Burns Night on 25 January”.

Even famed Scots poet Robert Burns described haggis as  “great chieftain o’ the pudding-race”.

So if your one of the millions of people who claim heritage back to Scotland, surely you’re indebted to the very meal that kept your ancestors fighting?
