FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Governor Jerry Brown approved a “right-to-die” measure, allowing terminally ill patients to seek physician-assisted suicide.
However, he’s vetoed a “right-to-try” bill, which would have permitted those patients to petition pharmaceutical companies for access to experimental drugs, prior to FDA approval.
Brown says while patients with life-threatening conditions should be allowed to try experimental drugs, the proposed changes to federal policies will streamline access.
He says before authorizing an alternative state pathway, we should give the federal expedited process a chance to work.
