FRESNO (KMJ) — Demands placed upon the front runner for the speaker of the house, is why Kevin McCarthy was compelled to drop out of the race.
That’s according to Valley Congressman Devin Nunes, who says he witnessed the candidate’s question and answer session Thursday morning.
McCarthy’s surprise announcement sent confusion and numerous questions all over Capitol Hill.
“We spent a couple of hours listening to all the candidates doing a question and answer”, says Valley Congressman Devin Nunes, “then we broke for about a two hour break and then in between that time Kevin just decided it just wasn’t worth it”.
He says a few members were making outrageous demands, and Kevin McCarthy just didn’t want to deal with it.
“They want to change all the rules, but nobody knows exactly what rules they want to change. In order to change the rules inside the Republican Conference you have to have 50% of the members agree and nobody agrees to the changes that they want to make”.
“They were demanding that if Kevin was speaker they would only vote for him if they put in their designated candidate to be the majority leader”.
There’s now no clear front-runner for in the Speaker of the House race.
KMJ’s Ray Appleton spoke to Congressman Nunes less than two hours after the news came in, and that interview can be heard below:
