FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Smoke-free zones and higher tobacco taxes — according to a new study published by University of California, Merced — are the best ways to discourage cigarette smoking.

Researchers discovered that a totally smoke-free environment, reduces the odds of taking up the habit by one-third.

They say California’s proposed cigarette tax increase of $2 a pack, could cut the youth smoking rate almost in half.
